TOB‑YG‑60 Wheel‑Type Manual Press Punch Machine for Precision Assembly and Forming

Product Overview and Ideal Applications

A manual press punch machine delivers controlled vertical force through a hand‑operated wheel or lever. Unlike pneumatic or hydraulic presses, it does not require compressed air, a power supply, or complex controls, making it an ideal tool for low‑volume precision work where the operator needs direct tactile feedback. The TOB‑YG‑60 is a wheel‑type manual press with a slider stroke of 35 mm, a throat height of 120 mm, and a throat depth of 60 mm, mounted on a rigid cast‑iron frame. It can be placed on any sturdy workbench in a laboratory, workshop, or small‑scale production line.

The press accommodates standard tooling with a die‑shank hole of 19 mm (+0.05/0.10 mm tolerance), allowing the user to fit punches, forming dies, riveting heads, or simple stamping tools. The work table measures 115 × 210 mm, providing enough space to position small jigs and fixtures. With a net weight of 32 kg, the press remains stable during operation without bolting to the bench, yet it can be moved by one person when needed.

Ideal for:

  • Battery laboratory technicians riveting tabs onto current collectors, pressing coin‑cell casings, or forming small electrode assemblies where exact, hand‑controlled pressure is required.
  • Electronics workshops assembling connectors, riveting contacts, or staking small components onto printed circuit boards.
  • Clock, camera, and micro‑motor manufacturers performing miniature press‑fit operations and bearing insertion.
  • Any quality‑control or prototype environment that needs a simple, instantly ready press without the noise and energy consumption of a hydraulic or pneumatic unit.

Where the Manual Press Fits in Battery Component Assembly

In battery prototyping and small‑series production, many operations still benefit from a skilled operator applying controlled pressure by hand. The TOB‑YG‑60 can be found in:

  • Tab‑to‑foil clinching: Before ultrasonic welding became the standard, a manual press with a dimple‑shaped punch was often used to mechanically clinch a nickel or aluminium tab to the current‑collector foil. Even today, for quick‑fix repairs or for research on unusual material combinations, a hand press provides the “feel” that prevents tearing the foil.
  • Coin‑cell crimping preparation: After stacking the electrodes and separators into a coin‑cell case, a light pre‑press can seat the components and ensure a flat stack before the final crimping in an automatic coin‑cell crimper. The TOB‑YG‑60 can perform this pre‑press with a simple flat punch.
  • Solid‑state electrolyte pellet pressing: When a solid electrolyte powder such as LLZO or LPSCl must be compacted into a thin pellet for testing, a manual press with a die set can apply a consistent, controllable force inside a glove box. The TOB‑YG‑60’s compact dimensions and lack of electronics allow it to be operated inside a glove box or dry room for air‑sensitive materials.
  • Assembly of custom battery test fixtures: Whether it’s pressing insulators into a Swagelok‑type cell or seating a reference electrode into a T‑cell, the press delivers just enough force without damaging delicate glass or ceramic parts.

The throat depth of 60 mm and throat height of 120 mm define the accessible working envelope: you can position a part up to 60 mm away from the front edge of the machine and up to 120 mm tall under the ram. This is suitable for small battery components and test fixtures.

How the Wheel‑Type Manual Press Works

The TOB‑YG‑60 uses a rack‑and‑pinion mechanism driven by a hand wheel. When the operator rotates the wheel, a pinion gear meshes with a rack cut into the slider, converting rotary motion into linear downward motion. The hand wheel provides mechanical advantage, so moderate effort on the rim produces a much larger force at the punch tip.

A key feature of wheel‑type presses is thepositive return stroke. Because the pinion drives the rack in both directions, the operator can raise the punch as soon as the pressing is complete, providing fast cycle times. Unlike lever‑type presses, the wheel does not need to be repositioned after each stroke; it can be turned continuously in one direction for a pressing cycle, then reversed to retract the ram.

The slider stroke of 35 mm is the total vertical travel of the ram. For most small‑part assembly operations, a stroke of 10–15 mm is sufficient, but the extra travel simplifies tooling changes and part loading. The die shank hole (19 mm diameter with a tolerance of +0.05 to +0.10 mm) accepts standard tool shanks of that size. The slight oversize ensures easy loading and removal, while the upper tolerance limit prevents excessive play that would cause misalignment. The tool is typically secured with a set screw accessible at the front of the slider.

The press frame is cast iron, which absorbs vibration and ensures that the force goes into the work piece rather than into elastic flexure of the machine. The work table is a flat machined surface that can be equipped with a T‑slot plate or a vice if required. The table itself is fixed in position relative to the ram, but the height of the tool can be adjusted by the tool holder or by using shims under the die.

Engineering FAQ — Manual Press Operations for Battery Assembly

Q1: Can I use the TOB‑YG‑60 to rivet aluminium tabs to copper foil for lithium‑ion cells?

Yes. With a suitable riveting tool (punch and anvil), the press can clinch a tab to the foil. However, for production cells, ultrasonic welding is generally preferred for its lower contact resistance and consistency. The manual press can be used for quick prototyping or for repairing a cell where a single tab needs to be re‑attached.

Q2: How much force can the press generate, and is it enough to press a coin‑cell together?

The maximum force is not specified in kN, as it depends on the operator’s strength and the mechanical advantage of the hand‑wheel diameter. For small riveting and forming tasks, the force is typically in the range of a few hundred kilograms to perhaps 1 kN. This is sufficient for pre‑pressing a coin‑cell stack before crimping, but it may not be sufficient to fully densify a solid‑state electrolyte pellet that requires a dedicated uniaxial press with a gauge.

Q3: What kind of tooling is supplied with the press, and can I purchase additional die sets?

The press is supplied without specific tooling; it is designed to accept standard 19 mm shank punches and dies that the user provides. Many commercial off‑the‑shelf die sets for eyelet riveting, hole punching, and forming are available with 19 mm shanks. TOB can supply basic punch‑and‑die sets or custom tooling upon request; please specify the operation and material dimensions.

Q4: Can the press be mounted on a vertical stand to operate in a horizontal orientation?

The TOB‑YG‑60 is designed for bench‑top use with the ram vertical. Turning it sideways or upside‑down would alter the lubrication of the rack and pinion and could cause the slider to fall under gravity when the hand wheel is released. It is strongly recommended to use the press only in its intended upright orientation.

Q5: Is there a risk of metal particles from the press contaminating battery electrodes?

The slider and rack mechanism are exposed inside the cast‑iron frame, and over time, slight wear may produce fine iron particles. In a battery lab, these particles could contaminate electrode surfaces. To mitigate this, regularly clean the press and apply a sparing amount of food‑grade lubricant. If you are working with very sensitive materials, consider covering the moving parts or operating the press in a clean environment with a protective shield around the working area.
